EAA condemns the Airstrike on a Kindergarten in Ethiopia
Education Above All (EAA) condemns the airstrike on a kindergarten in Ethiopia that killed at least four people, including two children. Friday’s strike occurred in the city of Mekelle, the capital of the northern Tigray region. Access to education is a basic human right and education facilities must remain safe spaces for learning and play at all times, including during conflict.
This unconscionable act illustrates how important it is to build on the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2601 which was unanimously adopted in 2021, and which calls for the protection education from attack.
This September 9, on the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, EAA will lead a call to all stakeholders to move beyond words and act now by fully implementing UNSCR 2601 and immediately enacting national plans to ensure schools remain a safe place for children to learn and play.
