Building Tomorrow

Building Tomorrow was founded to address the critical need for classrooms in sub-Saharan Africa. It envisions a world where every child with a desire to learn has a safe, permanent, and local place in which to do so. Building Tomorrow has extensive experience working with communities coping with poverty, and helping those communities gain access to quality primary education for their children. Its approach is to empower communities to invest their resources, time, and talents to help children in Uganda gain access to an education. Since 2007, they have constructed 15 primary schools in rural Uganda, with seven additional schools under active construction and site planning, impacting more than 4,000 children who previously have been denied their right to education. For each school built with the support of Building Tomorrow, the cost of construction materials and skilled labour is covered whilst the community commits to providing three acres of land and approximately 15, 000 hours of volunteer labor.

Founded in 2006, Building Tomorrow (BT) catalyses communities and individuals in support of access to quality education for students in East Africa. It does this by empowering young people to invest their time, talents and resources in support of new educational opportunities; facilitating the construction of community-built, locally sustained primary schools; and building the human capacity and leadership of locally-based school management teams.

BT works with local governments to identify communities in rural Uganda with little or no access to primary schools and with a strong commitment to their children’s education.  Through advocacy, outreach and fundraising, BT raises money for a new seven-classroom primary school in the identified communities.  The BT Fellow program engages Ugandan university graduates in community-based work with schools, teachers, students, and school management committees to identify, recruit, and retain out-of-school children in quality primary education.

In partnership with EAC, BT is implementing the Access to Quality Education in Rural Uganda project.  This project will construct 60 new primary schools by July 2019 and boost enrolment at 450 existing schools by enrolling 85 currently out of school children per school.  The project will also strengthen the capacity of head teachers through the BT Fellows program.
